We now present a gorgeous never-reissued 1971 LP of traditional Arab maqam music released on the formidable Unesco Musical Sources collection. Maqam – signifying a place, high rank or transcendence in Arabic – is a melodic modal and improvisational system used in classical Arab music.

Side A showcases instrumental maqam forms, also called taqsim, and Side B presents the llayali, a musical form based on vocal improvisationAll the musicians here are Iraqi except for on track A3, which features the Lebanese buzuk player Matar Muhammad.

The many forms of Arabian maqam, particularly Iraqi maqam, are closely connected with the Turkish makam, Azeri mugam, and the Persian dastgah, whose influence can be heard clearly here.

The Dan people inhabit the mountainous region of northwestern Ivory Coast and northeastern Liberia. Their remote, lushly forested habitat shielded the Dan from outside influences and Christian proselytism, which sustained an unbroken continuity of their complex social and religious traditional practices with a deep connection with nature and the realm of spirits and the ancestors.

This very rare album of the music of Ivorian Dan, also known as the Yacouba in Ivory Coast, features forceful, inspired esoteric rituals and ceremonies recorded in the village of Trinle Diapleu (A1-A3) and the city of Yapleu (A3, A4, B1-B6) in northwestern Ivory Coast around 1980. The tracks here include trance-like polyphonic male (A1, A2, A4, B5, B6) and female (B2-B4) choruses and soloists in call-response with lead singers at times modulating their voice to achieve an otherworldly sound, accompanied by drums, shakers, rattles, and metal percussion; percussion (B1) and an enthralling antelope-horn ensemble with drums (A3).

Following a Cheikha Donna post on the label Khaldiphone, we continue our explorations with a particularly fiery 7-inch Khaldiphone record by Bennasser Ou Khouya. He released many wonderful 45 rpms on a variety of labels (Boussiphone, La Voix du Sud, Atlassiphone, Sakhi Disque, Ifriquiaphone, etc.) throughout his musical career, which lasted from the mid-1960s until his retirement in 1984. Born in 1939, Ou Khouia's traditional music and repertoire, in Amazigh and Arabic, was extremely popular throughout Morocco.

The group’s excellence also owes much to the accomplished female singer Cheikha Hadda Ouakki (b. 1953), who joined Ou Khouya’s group in 1969 to form a formidable male-female singing duo. Ouakki is an iconic Amazigh singer in her own right, and pursued a successful solo career that continues to this day.

This dynamic, poetic pair is brilliantly supported here by a mellifluous violinplayed upright like the traditional rebabclapping, and a bendir frame drum.

Sadly Ou Khouya’s precious Amazigh musical heritage is now largely unknown by younger generations and his recordings are difficult to find.
