Saint Ivan, born in 876, pursued a life of Christian asceticism devoted to meditation, fasting and prayer. He performed many miracles to benefit people, attracting supplicants and even wild animals, which brought him an undesired fame (he even refused to meet the tsar to avoid the temptations of vanity and pride; the two men bowed to each other from a distance). Fleeing the attention, he sought refuge in a cave in the Rila mountains. With his disciples, who came to the mountains to receive his teachings, the hermit founded a monastery that stands today near his original cave.

This beautiful LP for the Celebration of the Feast of St. Ivan is sung by the monks of the Rila monastery, as the Eastern Church’s entirely vocal liturgy permits no instrumental accompaniment. Many pilgrims come to assist in the October 19 ceremony to celebrate the highly revered Saint.
