Jamil Bachir - Luth Traditionnel - Jamil Bachir ‘Ud – Iraq Arabesques N°4 - Recorded by Jean-Claude Chabrier, 1973 (LP)

I'd already collected a few lovely discs by Jamil’s younger brother Munir Bachir, when I heard ethnomusicologist Jean-Claude Chabrier speaking on a French radio show in the early 1980s. Chabrier played Jamil Bachir’s music and described his profound influence on Iraqi music. I was awestruck and deeply moved by Bachir’s timeless, sensuous playing and immediately set out to find a copy of this already-out-of-print album—as well as the nine other recordings on Chabrier’s Arabesque label—a time-consuming and uncertain affair in the pre-Internet era. This is my very favorite ‘ud recording, but it is unfortunately the only one I've ever heard from Bachir. If anyone out there has other high-resolution recordings of the great Iraqi master, I would be delighted to post them.

J’avais déjà quelques disques du frère cadet de Jamil, Munir Bachir, lorsque j'ai écouté l'ethnomusicologue Jean-Claude Chabrier dans une émission radio, sur France Culture ou France Musique, au début des années 1980, au cours de laquelle il a longuement passé la musique de Jamil Bachir et a décrit sa profonde influence sur la musique irakienne. J'ai été immédiatement impressionné et captivé par le jeu intemporel et sensuel de Jamil Bachir et me suis mis à la recherche de cet album – ainsi que les neuf autres titres de la série Arabesque, tous déjà épuisés et quasi inconnus – une affaire chronophage et bien incertaine avant l'avènement de l'Internet. C'est mon enregistrement préféré de luth arabe, mais je n’en connais pas d’autre de lui. Si quelqu'un possède d'autres enregistrements en haute résolution du grand maître irakien, je serais absolument ravi de les poster sur le blog.
