Muranao Kakolintang - Philippine Gong
Music from Lanao Vol. 2 (The Village of Taraka, Molondo and Bagoaingud) -
Lyrichord LLST 7326 – Recorded by Steven W. Otto & Usopay H. Cadar (LP)
This indigenous
gong-chime music, recorded in villages near Lake Lanao in the province of Lanao
del Sur, is very distinct from its gamelan counterparts in Bali and
Java: lighter in mood and texture, less cerebral, more groovy. Note that certain tracks on the LP are performed by
children, and that, until recently, the kulingtan, a row of five to nine small gongs, was played solely by
women.
