In 1990, I met a wonderful gentleman in the Cotonou market (pictured above with his son, who is holding an LP by the father of Juju music I.K. Dairo), who found many great unmarked cassettes for me. He was passionate about music, both traditional and modern, and was utterly delighted when he heard the two Indian raga cassettes I had with me, which I gave him in return.

Featured here is a live performance by Moufa Laif, Porto Novo’s most eminent Yoruba Apala singer in the 1980s, with particularly good gan gan talking drums. The following four tracks are heartfelt renditions of Catholic hymns. Both were probably recorded in the late 1980s.
