We now share a second release by the great Cheikha Rimitti (1923-2006), featuring her deep bluesy singing accompanied by Guellal drum, Gasba reed flute and bursts of ululation, which convey a traditional texture deeply rooted in Bedouin music.

Side A – Ya Hlima: Rimitti blames Hlima (a woman) for being apprehended by the gendarmes.
Side B – Ehdi Salra: Rimitti narrates the story of a thoughtful and angry woman in love with a man, but can’t manage the situation.

M. S. Subbulakshmi (1916–2004) was one of the greatest Carnatic singers of the 20th century. Born into a musical family in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, she embraced singing at an early age and honed her skill under the tutelage of her guru Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer (1908-2003).

Her powerful, expressive voice and technical mastery earned her strong praise early on. Subbulakshmi also played and sang in several Tamil-language films, notably Meera (1945), where she plays the title role of the legendary 16th-century mystic, poetess and Krishna devotee. She was launched onto the national stage in 1947 when the film was remade in Hindi.

In addition to singing in various Indian regional languages, Subbulakshmi expanded her musical horizons and creative palette by mastering the North Indian idiom with other musical luminaries, including vocalists Narayanrao Vyas (1902–1984) and Siddheswari Devi (1908-1977). Ravi Shankar (1920-2012) once said, “She built that bridge across like no other south Indian musician did. Though many of us didn’t understand the nuances of the languages she sang in, it would be impossible to say that we were not swept off our feet by her voice and devotion."

The boundary-breaking artist also became a global ambassador for India by performing abroad, including at the United Nations General Assembly in 1966. Subbulakshmi was instrumental in the introduction of Carnatic music to non-Indian audiences.

This set of ten Meera Bhajans in Hindi showcases the mesmerizing fluency and pitch-perfect poetic phrasing of Subblulakshmi’s deep golden voice, suffused with sensuous and soulful devotion.

She is accompanied here by V. V. Subramanian on violin and T. K. Murthy (b. 1924) on mridangam.

The
San (aka Bushmen) are a nomadic hunter-gatherer people who inhabit the semi-arid Kalahari Desert, mainly in Botswana and Namibia, were these undated recordings were presumably recorded. Some researchers believe that the San’s ancestors have lived in Southern Africa for more than 50,000 years.

The San live in small, egalitarian 20- to 60- person groups that govern by consensus rather than via a leader, for which sharing resources and collective ceremonies and rituals are paramount.

According to curator and San rock art specialist Geoffrey Blundell, “Central to these rituals is an invisible energy, said by the San to be found in almost all animals but in great quantities in the eland [large antelope]. San shamans harness this supernatural energy in order to undertake the dangerous journey to the world of spirits, where they must perform various tasks such as rainmaking, fighting off evil spirits, and curing the sick. (…) This [healing or trance] dance was, and still is in the Kalahari, the central mechanism for harnessing the supernatural power residing in eland and other animals. Often performed around the carcass of a recently killed animal, the trance dance is circular in movement; men and older women shamans dance in a circle, while young women sit, clap, and sing songs (themselves thought to carry supernatural energy). The rhythmic singing and clapping and the intense dancing for hours on end produce altered states of consciousness in which the shamans experience, first, visual imagery, and later, more complex multi-sensory hallucinations.”*

The serene, otherworldly and highly inspired music on this disc features singing and dongu thumb piano (A1), a musical bow with the mouth used as a resonator (A2), a quirky bowed string instrument (A3), a xylophone solo (B1), and a true gem with two voices and xylophone (B2).
