Hudba Arabského Orientu a Severní Afriky (Music of the Arabian Orient and North Africa) – Supraphon 0 17 1931 – Disc 1, recorded by Václav Kubica, released 1976 (4 LP)

I have the pleasure of presenting this forgotten four-LP box set of essential authentic folk and classical music from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco recorded by Czech ethnomusicologist Vaclav Kubica (b. 1926) on the Czech label Supraphon. Kubica also released Iraqi music recordings on the great early Ocora series (Musique Populaire Traditionnelle d’Iraq – OCR 55).

Here’s the first disc of the collection showcasing Iraqi music, including a precious track by the great ud lute maestro Jamil Bachir (1921-1977) (B4), kanun zither (B5), rebab violin (A2, A3, A4), zurna oboe (B2, B3), Bedouin (A1, A2) and Gypsy (A5) music, a sword dance (B3) and more.

J’ai le plaisir de vous présenter ce coffret quatre disques essentiel tombé dans l’oubli, comprenant de superbes musiques folkloriques et classiques authentiques d'Irak, de Jordanie, du Liban, de Syrie, d'Égypte, de Libye, de Tunisie, d'Algérie et du Maroc enregistrées par l'ethnomusicologue tchèque Vaclav Kubica (né en 1926) sur le label tchèque Supraphon. Vaclav Kubica a également publié des enregistrements irakiens incontournables sur Ocora (Musique Populaire Traditionnelle d’Iraq – OCR 55).

Nous commençons ici par le premier disque du coffret sur la musique irakienne, avec notamment un précieux morceau du grand maître du luth ud Jamil Bachir (1921-1977) (B4), de la cithare kanun (B5), du violon rebab (A2, A3, A4), du hautbois zurna (B2 , B3), de la musique bédouine (A1, A2) et tzigane (A5), et une danse du sabre (B3).

Je partagerai les disques 2 (Jordanie, Liban, Syrie), 3 (Egypte) et 4 (Libye, Tunisie, Algérie, Maroc) du coffret dans les semaines à venir.

B1 – Jalghi Baghdadi (ancient Iraqi musical tradition) by Jalghi Baghdadi ensemble with a four-stringed jawza spike fiddle, santur dulcimer, riqq tambourine and tabla drum. Baghdad.

 

B2 – Group of Dabka men dancing in an open circle, with men’s voices and a zurna oboe. Mahmudija. 

 

B3 – A group of sword dancers – each with a saber and a small round darakka shield – dance to a zurna oboe. Baghdad.

 

B4 – Taksim improvisation by Jamil Bachir (1921-1977), oud (or ‘ud) lute.

B5 – Taksim improvisation by Salim Hussein, kanun zither. Baghdad.
