The annual international Shiraz Festival of Arts, held in Shiraz-Persepolis from 1967 to 1977, offered a unique global program of cross-cultural encounters and discoveries, featuring music, dance, drama and film. The breath of their concerts, for example, spanned the traditional world (Iranian music, Japanese No music, African music, Vilayat Khan), Western classical music (Martha Argerich, Arthur Rubinstein), the modern avant-garde (John Cage) and Jazz (Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln).

This panorama of classical Persian music was recorded during the 1971 Shiraz Festival, which celebrated the 2500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire with great pomp.

The LP showcases delicate, timeless solos by virtuosos Ahmad Ebadi (1906-1993) on setar lute (A1), Hoseyn Tehrani (1912-1974) on tombak drum (A2), Asghar Bahari (1905-1995) on kamanche bowed string (B1), and Lotfollah Madj (1917-1978) on the long-necked tar lute (B2).
