This distinguished Hindustani Kirana Gharana singer was the eldest daughter of the founder of Kirana Gharana himself, Abdul Kareem Khan (1872-1937). Despite her prestigious lineage and exceptional talent, Barodekar had to fight to assert herself in a male-dominated musical milieu, and rose to become the first female artist to perform in a ticketed auditorium, in 1925. Barodekar had a huge following and helped popularize Hindustani classical music throughout her long career.

This 45 rpm features stellar examples of her soft, elegant voice delivered with poise, subtle virtuosity, restraint and heartfelt emotion. Barodekar is accompanied here by Shamsuddin Khan on tabla.

Another brilliant Barodekar album: ECLP 2356.

  1. Fantastic share, thanks much for sharing. These EPs by the great artists are really special, and are often harder to get than their LPs. BTW, the Raga names need to be reversed in the FLAC files - Bhairavi is Shyam Kalyan, and vice versa

    1. Thank you for your comment and for bringing this issue to my attention. I corrected the problem. I'll feature more 45s of great masters in future posts.
