Saint Ivan, born in 876, pursued a life of Christian asceticism devoted to meditation, fasting and prayer. He performed many miracles to benefit people, attracting supplicants and even wild animals, which brought him an undesired fame (he even refused to meet the tsar to avoid the temptations of vanity and pride; the two men bowed to each other from a distance). Fleeing the attention, he sought refuge in a cave in the Rila mountains. With his disciples, who came to the mountains to receive his teachings, the hermit founded a monastery that stands today near his original cave.

This beautiful LP for the Celebration of the Feast of St. Ivan is sung by the monks of the Rila monastery, as the Eastern Church’s entirely vocal liturgy permits no instrumental accompaniment. Many pilgrims come to assist in the October 19 ceremony to celebrate the highly revered Saint.

  2. Wonderful!

I always thought it as very open-minded for a western classical label (Archiv Music) specializing in pre-Mozart repertoire could also come up with occasional surprises such as this one (which I have seen or even heard of). Archiv Music also published a set of three Balinese gamelan LPs which I love listening to. The 1970s were in some ways the real "mother-lode" of world music releases before the media and audience began to name the music "World Music," actively seek it out, and go to concerts. There were people in the 1980s who would proudly proclaim at parties that they were "world music" fans. Seems almost impossible now that the fad has gone but the serious people are still collecting and listening.

    Thank you again!

    1. World/Traditional music was also prestigious in France in the early 80s, with many great concerts of Indian masters, etc., and many magazines which included a world music category and graded the latest Ocora release... Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan made a particularly strong impression here. People with cultural, religious or musical knowledge of non-European civilisations tended to be highly regarded.

  3. Thank you! Spent a night at Rila Monastery once. Attended a service while there, of course. Magical. Woke up in the morning with the grounds dusted in snow.

    1. That sounds like an amazing experience. Tell me is there a public space there with St. Ivan's remains ? I read they're very special for Bulgarians.
