According to the 1967 liner notes written by the Mexican anthropologist Arturo Warman (1937-2003), “the limits of the world of traditional Mexican music remain unknown… This selection is therefore not a representative sample but a testimony, a partial vision of some aspects of a seemingly inexhaustible domain.”

“Our westernized, urban culture leads us to isolate the musical phenomenon and see it as an independent and self-sufficient language, whereas in traditional cultures music is not considered an autonomous phenomenon outside human activity… Traditional music is a vital part of Catholic religious ceremonies, festivals, harvest rituals, as well as non-religious activities… To dance is also a way to manifest one’s adherence to ancient customs, to more traditional forms of culture.”

Volume 1 of this essential 17-LP collection showcases the traditional music of indigenous cultures, which at the time still preserved some traces of pre-Hispanic traditions, on Side A; and on Side B presents the more modern/urban mestizo musical heritage.

The indigenous music on Side A features membrane percussion (bombo drum?), brass instruments (trumpet?), wind instruments (piccolo flute?), stringed instruments (harps?) and voices; and the Mestizo music on Side B includes voices, violins, various harps and guitars. Mestizo, meaning “mixed-race,” has become a general cultural term with which many Mexicans identify.

Amir Khan (1912-1974) was an unrivalled Hindustani classical Khyal vocalist gifted with a deep, mellow baritone voice that effortlessly expressed intensity, sensuality, creativity, dignity and glowing majesty.

Alas, this intimate recital of personal compositions by Khan, the founder of Indore Gharana, was his last recording, as he died tragically a few weeks later in a car accident, depriving India and the world of one of the greatest singers of the 20th century at the height of his powers.

Khan is accompanied here by Gobinda Bose on tabla.

Senufo - Fodonon Funeral Music – Le Chant du Monde – LDX 74 838, recorded by Michel de Lannoy, 1976 and 1981-1982

This LP presents music performed by the Fonombele—a subsgroup of the Senufo people, in northern Ivory Coast and extending to southern Burkina Faso and Mali—during the funeral of a woman (Side A) and a man (Side B). These funeral rites last several days and are essential moments in community life when traditional culture and belief systems are reaffirmed and regenerated, as well as an occasion to strengthen a group’s social fabric and their ties with neighboring villages, other cultural/ethnic groups, and distant relatives.

The diversity of those attenting the funerals in the village of Lataha in 1981-1982 is reflected in the variety of performers, including young Diula girls (A7), the music of the Mandinka hunters (B4), male and female initiates of the Poro secret societies to which the deceased belonged (A2, B3), and musicians from other villages (B4, B5). Funeral music, ceremonies, laments, dancing, and ritualized teasing–featuring xylophones, bells, drums and percussion, harps, flutes, and singing–honor the departed and celebrate life. In traditional rural Africa the primary focus is to nurture and maintain the balance of a complex network of social relations, from the extended family to the clan, the village, neighboring villages and ethnic/cultural groups, and the symbolism of the natural environment, essential to Senufo identity.

Lalgudi Jarayaman was an extraordinary soloist who was instrumental in presenting the Carnatic violin to the four corners of India and the world. He was also a prolific composer, a great teacher, and a major innovator who performed Jugalbandi duets with Hindustani luminaries like Vilayat Khan and Amjad Ali Khan, and pioneered a fascinating format showcasing the violin, flute, and veena as heard on this lyrical LP. Jarayaman plays in a quintet here with N. Ramani (1934-2015) on the venu flute, R. Venkatraman (1938-2010) on veena, Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman (b. 1935) on mridangan, and T. H. Vinayakram (b. 1942) on the ghatam. The delicate interaction and almost telepathic sensitivity between the artists is palpable.
