Cheikha Salha / الشيخة الصالحة – Khaldiphone - AB 216 (Vinyl 7 inch, 45 RPM)
Born in the countryside between Settat and Casablanca, Cheikha Salha (? - 2013) settled in Casablanca and became the apprentice to Cheikha Fatima Zehafa (1938-2000) and through her was introduced to other artists. She began performing with violinist Cheikh Lahcen El Meskini, with whom she recorded some half dozen records, notably on the label Casaphone.
She also met Cheikha Donna** who helped her record this single on the Khaldiphone label, where Salha reinterprets “Zaouia,” her teacher Cheikha Fatima Zehafa’s most famous song. Salha’s raw, powerful voice and direct, unrestrained emotion perfectly exemplify the central role cheikhates play in the rich Aita (signifying cry or lament) musical tradition.
Née en milieu rural entre Settat et Casablanca, Cheikha Salha (? - 2013) s'installe à Casablanca et devient l'apprentie de Cheikha Fatima Zehafa (1938-2000), ce qui lui permet de rencontrer d'autres artistes. Elle se produira ensuite avec le violoniste Cheikh Lahcen El Meskini avec qui elle enregistre une demi-douzaine de disques, notamment sur le label Casaphone.
Elle rencontre également Cheikha Donna** et enregistre ce 45 tours sur le label Khaldiphone où elle réinterprète Zaouia, la chanson la plus connue de Cheikha Fatima Zehafa qui l’initia au Aita. Ici, la voix brute et puissante, ainsi que l’émotion directe et libérée de Cheikha Salha illustrent parfaitement le rôle central joué par les cheikhates dans la riche tradition musicale Aita (signifiant cri ou lamentation).

In collaboration with Joao and Hakim, we have to date collected a quality selection of some 200 Moroccan 7-in records on 28 different labels. Our goal is to gradually map out this vast, forgotten recorded heritage thanks mostly to Hakim in Marrakech who finds good copies of rare 45 RPMs which we then record, edit and scan. Hakim also seeks out information about the artists, labels and their catalogues. Joao plans to start recording Moroccan shellac 78 RPMs shortly. These recording are constantly being added to Hakim’s Youtube channel*, and I’ll continue to share some of our great finds with you on this blog.
En collaboration avec Joao et Hakim, nous avons à ce jour collecté une sélection qualitative d'environ 200 45 tours marocains sur 28 labels différents. Notre objectif est de cartographier progressivement ce vaste patrimoine musical enregistré difficile d’accès surtout grâce à Hakim à Marrakech qui sait où dénicher des bonnes copies de 45 tours rares que nous enregistrons, éditons et scannons. Hakim recherche également des informations sur les artistes, les labels et leurs catalogues. Joao prévoit d’enregistrer des 78 tours marocains sous peu. Ces enregistrements viendront enrichir la chaîne Youtube* d’Hakim et je partagerai quelques-unes de nos belles trouvailles sur ce blog.
