Ahmed El Bacha / الرايس أحمد الباشا – Ahouach Haha – Ifriquiaphone - IFK 117 (Vinyl 7 inch, 45 RPM)
Ahwash (Ahwach or Ahouach) is a traditional Berber collective dance and ritual from southern Morocco that incorporates improvised singing. There are a dozen different regional subgenres with music ensembles transmitting their region’s history and traditions and celebrating weddings and traditional annual Moussem (or Mouggar) festivals.
Here Raiss Ahmed El Bacha, the renowned master of Ahwach nai flute and drums from the village of Ihahen near Essaouira, celebrates rain, a generous argan tree harvest and love. On the cover, he is shown wearing a stunning Majmar and teapot on his head symbolizing hospitality, balance and precision.
El Bacha recorded his first 45 RPM in Agadir in the early 60s on the Sawt Agadir label. After performing in the Folklore Festival in Casablanca he also met representatives of the Boussiphone and Ifriquiaphone labels on which he subsequently recorded a number of 7 inch 45 RPMs.
On this fascinating album, El Bacha’s troupe, including Raiss Lahcen Tayeh on drums, weaves frantic increasingly fast rhythms punctuated by flights of twirling flutes.
L’Ahwach (ou Ahouach) est une danse collective et un rituel traditionnel berbère du sud Marocain qui incorpore du chant improvisé. Il existe une douzaine de sous-genres d’Ahwach régionaux avec des ensembles musicaux qui transmettent l’histoire et les traditions de leur régions et animent des mariages et les fête moussem (ou mouggar) annuelles.
Ici le maître réputé du Ahwach jouant de la flute nei et du tambour Raiss Ahmed El Bacha, issu du village d’Ihahen près d’Essaouira, célèbre la pluie, les récoltes généreuses d’arganiers, ou l’amour. Sur la pochette du disque El Bacha est coiffé d’un étonnant « Majmar » surmonté d’une théière symbolisant l’hospitalité, l’équilibre et la précision.
Raiss Ahmed El Bacha enregistre son premier 45 tours au début des années 60 à Agadir sur le label Sawt Agadir. Lors de sa participation au Festival Folklorique à Casablanca, il rencontre les éditeurs de Boussiphone et d’Ifriquiaphone pour lesquels il enregistra des 45 tours.
Sur cet album fascinant, la troupe d’El Bacha, avec notamment Raiss Lahcen Tayeh au tambour, tisse des rythmes effrénés de plus en plus rapides ponctués d’envolées de flûtes virevoltantes.

In collaboration with Joao and Hakim, we have to date collected a quality selection of some 200 Moroccan 7-in records on 28 different labels. Our goal is to gradually map out this vast, forgotten recorded heritage thanks mostly to Hakim in Marrakech who finds good copies of rare 45 RPMs which we then record, edit and scan. Hakim also seeks out information about the artists, labels and their catalogues. Joao plans to start recording Moroccan shellac 78 RPMs shortly. These recording are constantly being added to Hakim’s Youtube channel*, and I’ll continue to share some of our great finds with you on this blog.
En collaboration avec Joao et Hakim, nous avons à ce jour collecté une sélection qualitative d'environ 200 45 tours marocains sur 28 labels différents. Notre objectif est de cartographier progressivement ce vaste patrimoine musical enregistré difficile d’accès surtout grâce à Hakim à Marrakech qui sait où dénicher des bonnes copies de 45 tours rares que nous enregistrons, éditons et scannons. Hakim recherche également des informations sur les artistes, les labels et leurs catalogues. Joao prévoit d’enregistrer des 78 tours marocains sous peu. Ces enregistrements viendront enrichir la chaîne Youtube* d’Hakim et je partagerai quelques-unes de nos belles trouvailles sur ce blog.
