This rare album on the Sapra Ltd label presents authentic ritual, ceremonial, and rite-of-passage music of the semi-nomadic pastoral Masai (or Maasai) People of the Kenyan plains.

Sounds of Masailand features enthralling syncopated polyphonic call-response vocals, sometimes accompanied by kudu antelope horns and rattle bells, in songs about the lion – king of the savannah at once venerated as a totemic animal and ritually hunted in the context of a rite of passage – with a lion hunting ceremony (A1) and warrior lion songs inspiring trance-inducing dances (A3, B2); music about cattle, which are the Maasai's most prized possession and main source of sustenance, with a milking song (A2) and a punyua song praising cattle (B1); girls greeting warriors upon their return to the traditional Maasai manyatta camp and ritually challenging them (A4, B3); praise songs about the warriors' deeds and bravery (A5, B5); and elders commending the young warriors on their way to being initiated into the tribe as men (B4).

Ce album rare du label Sapra Ltd présente des authentiques musiques rituelles, cérémonielles et rites de passage du peuple pastoral semi-nomade des Maasaï (ou Massaï) des plaines du Kenya.

Sounds of Masailand comprend de fascinants chants polyphoniques syncopés, certains accompagnés de cornes d'antilope kudu et de hochets à clochettes, dans des chants sur le lion – le roi de la savane, à la fois vénéré comme animal totémique et rituellement chassé dans le contexte d'un rite de passage – avec une cérémonie de chasse au lion (A1) et des chants de guerriers sur lion menant à des danses endiablées, parfois même à la possession (A3, B2); des musiques en l'honneur de leurs troupeaux, qui constituent la plus grande fierté et la principale source de subsistance des Maasaï (A2, B1); des filles accueillant et défiant rituellement des guerriers à leur retour au manyatta, le campement traditionnel Maasaï (A4, B3); des louanges sur les actes de bravoure et le courage des guerriers (A5, B5); et des anciens adressant des félicitations et des encouragements à l'attention des jeunes guerriers afin qu'ils deviennent pleinement des hommes au sein de la tribu (B4).
