A few weeks ago, my friend João excitedly called me about some 40 cassettes from the Maghreb he'd unearthed in a flea market, including a fabulous unmarked recording from Morocco. Luckily, another friend, R, put me in contact with Hajar in Morocco, whose father kindly identified the music as that of Al Aloua—a popular music subgenre of al Aita—a traditional Moroccan music and poetry in the Arabic language from the region between Casablanca-Settat and Rabat-Kenitra.

The brilliant music performed here—featuring a bowed violin, an unidentified plucked stringed instrument, a male singer, female singers, and percussion—displays deep, fascinating and quirky interlaced sounds and moods, at once reflective and forceful.

Il y a quelques semaines, mon ami João m'a appelé pour m’annoncer qu’il venait de dénicher une quarantaine de vieilles cassettes du Maghreb dans un marché aux puces, y compris un fabuleux enregistrement non identifié du Maroc. Fort heureusement, mon ami R a contacté Hajar au Maroc, dont le père a eu l’amabilité d’identifier la cassette en question : de la musique al Aloua – un sous-genre de la musique al Aita – un art musical et poétique populaire traditionnel du Maroc en langue arabe en provenance du centre-ouest du pays, autour de l'axe Casablanca-Settat jusqu'à Rabat et Kenitra. 

Cette musique brillante – comprenant un violon à archet, un instrument à cordes pincées non identifié, un chanteur, des chanteuses et des percussions – tisse des sonorités et des atmosphères sinueuses fascinantes, à la fois contemplatives et dynamiques.
