Born into a family of classical musicians in Draksharamam, Andhra Pradesh, Emani Sankara Sastry studied the veena with his father in the disciplined time-honored tradition, and established himself as a highly respected musician and director of the National Orchestra at All India Radio.

Sastry was a global ambassador of Indian musical heritage, and toured widely in India and abroad, playing jugalbandi duets with Hindustani luminaries, including Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan (1927-2017) and Ravi Shakar (1920-2012). He was also a dedicated teacher, who trained the illustrious veena master Chitti Babu (1936-1996), among many others. Sastry also enlivened his veena performances and orchestral compositions with modern, innovative touches.

These rare recordings offer stellar examples of the vidwan’s vibrant “singing” veena imbued with imagination and serenity.

Né dans une famille de musiciens classiques à Draksharamam dans l’Andhra Pradesh, Emani Sankara Sastry étudia la vînâ auprès de son père dès son plus jeune âge dans la pure tradition. Il s’imposa rapidement comme un musicien d’exception et est nommé directeur du National Orchestra à All India Radio. 

Emani Sankara Sastry était un véritable ambassadeur du patrimoine musical de l’Inde qui  donna de nombreux récitals à travers l’Inde et à l'étranger, y compris en duos jugalbandi avec des grands musiciens d’Inde du Nord comme Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan (1927-2017) et Ravi Shankar (1920-2012). Il forma également toute une génération de musiciens, notamment l'illustre Chitti Babu (1936-1996) à la vînâ. Sastry apporta toujours une touche moderniste et innovatrice à son jeu de vînâ et dans ses compositions orchestrales.

Ces superbes enregistrements du grand vidwan sont une excellente manière de découvrir sa vînâ « chantante » pleine de vie imprégnée de créativité et de sérénité.
