Lalgudi G. Jayaraman with G. Srimathi – Violin Solos of Carnatic Music – His Master's Voice – ECSD 2435, 1970 (LP)
Lalgudi Jarayaman (1930-2013), born in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, was one of the most brilliant Carnatic violinist of the second half of the 20th century. Jarayaman’s father and teacher, the famous violinist Lalgudi Gopal Iyer (1900-1970), was the grandson of Lalgudi Rama Iyer (1807-1867), a direct disciple of Saint Tyagaraja. As the violin was first introduced in Carnatic music in the beginning of the 19th century, Valadi Radhakrishna Iyer (1849-1908) was actually the first violinist in the family (see photograph below).
Here, Jarayaman weaves lyrical and haunting sonorities that transcend the South Indian genre to touch upon the universal, accompanied by his sister G. Srimati on violin, K. Sivaraman (b. 1935) on the mridangam double-faced drum, Alangudi K. Ramachandran (1912-?) on the earthenware ghatam drum, and R. Krishnan on the tanpura drone.
