ReplyDeleteThis music reached a wider audience in the 1980s and 1990s when major labels like 4AD, Nonesuch and Philips released Bulgarian female vocal albums, one even winning a Grammy Award in 1989!

ReplyDeleteYou have posted several recordings that were excerpted from Gilbert Rouget's field recordings on his 1952 trip through West Africa. Among the many published excerpts from this trip are many 78s on the Africa Vox label. A nice collection, including seventeen discs labeled DT1-DT17, can be found on the French ethnomusicology resource CREM-CNRS:
