This is the first record we feature from the enchanting Indian music collection of 45s and 33s which belonged to South-Indian classical dancer and teacher Amala Devi. She also lovingly customized the sleeves of these records, which originally came in generic white or flowered jackets, with colored paper, different writing styles and handmade cutouts from newspapers and art books all assembled with devotion and care.

Born in 1927, Ram Narayan (or Ram Narain) was the first sarangi player to achieve global recognition with his abstract and sensuous flights with the bowed instrument’s rich earthy sonorities. He is accompanied on tabla by his older brother, the legendary Chatur Lal (1925-1965), who died at the height of his musical powers. "He did not merely accompany, he did not dominate, he supplemented and deepened," according to the Time's of India’s October 16, 1965 obituary.

  1. Wonderful share, many thanks. Though Pt. Ram Narayan has a lot of albums, he was at his best in his earlier years. This is one such example.....

  2. Thanks. There is something undeniably charming about 7-inch records. And the home-made artwork -- I love it!

    1. I see that I'm not alone in finding Indian 45 rpms charming as you just featured one on your blog by A. T. Kanan, which was unbeknown to me. Thanks. Plus 7-inch records often feature music not included in 33s.

  8. Thanks for this ! Still living, he's one of the last true classical Hindustani. From that old generation, I think he really stands aside an Ali Akbar Khan, Vilayat Khan or Nikhil Banerjee.
