This album by the brilliant hoddu lute master Saidou Bâ is my favorite recording of Fulani-Peul (or Pulaar) griot music. Deeply suffused in Peul culture, it transports listeners to the inspired, fluid and sensuous African magic of old. Bâ was born in 1939 into a family of traditional musicians in Daou, in the Gorgol region in Southern Mauritania, near the Senegal River. After his father, Hamady Coulo, a famous guitar virtuoso, died when he was still young, Bâ was sent to Wodobéré (Odobéré), Senegal, to perfect his hoddu technique and enhance his knowledge of Peul oral tradition with master musicians. Bâ quickly made his mark on the music scene, playing with prestigious traditional music ensembles, as well as launching a career as a radio-host at Radio Saint Louis and later at Radio Mauritanie in Nouakchott, the capital. Bâ was also a great teacher, offering a modern music course in Guinea for a few years in the late 1960s, and playing hoddu in l’Orchestre National de Mauritanie, which he later directed.

A1 – Sayglaré - A tribute to Gueladio - Hambodurion, an illustrious Peul horseman from the Ségou region, Mali, who embarked on strange and epic journeys.

A2 – Malissadio - Rivers have their mysteries. The master of the waters, inhabiting dark worlds with a million eyes, took a beautiful maiden named Mali to the underworld where death is not the end but a transfiguration. Her lover Saïdou wrote this song to mourn the loss of his beloved.

A3 – Néema - The laws of nature, occasionally cruel, follow their own esoteric logic. Fortunes change, the weak become strong, and the strong succumb to mere memories and nostalgia. Songs like this soar into the night in the face of the unfathomable.

B1 – N’Diarou - Every Peul comes alive and vibrates upon hearing the epic story of Oumarel Sawa-Dondi.

B2 – Domba - Shoemakers may be skilled craftsmen and make beautiful shoes, but the young cobbler Sylla achieved the feat of crafting the most beautiful pair of shoes between the time of two music choruses. In return, his sister composed this famous song.

B3 – Makary – This lament celebrates the memory of a young slave girl who immolated herself in the manner of a Buddhist monk. Her act of revolt gives hope to all beings experiencing the shackles and humiliation of slavery.*

According to Sundanese culture scholar Viviane Sukanda*, “This record is the first to highlight Sundanese Tembang Sunda (Sundanese flowers) vocal and instrumental music.” On the album, a traditional quartet, featuring Oyo Suwardi (six-hole suling flute), Achmad (long 18-string kepaci zither), Yaya  (16-string rincik zither) and Udjang (seven-string jentreng zither), plays instrumental music (A1, A3, B3).

On five other tracks the quartet accompanies female vocalist Imas Permas (A2, A4, B1, B2, B4) and male vocalists Rd. Safarman Bratawidjaja (A2, A4) and Karman Sastraprawira (B4). The suling flute and three zithers weave dreamlike, mellow and sensuous music behind the vocalists’ heartfelt poetic musings.

Nelengnengkung (or Panimang) [excerpt from lullaby B1]

To the sound of the gong, to the sound of the gong,

Quickly be strong and mature,

Quickly go seek Knowledge,

Quickly learn how to love your mother.

Go to the end of the Pandak river,

Go to its very mouth,

You will never find anything comparable,

To a mother’s love for her child.

vite sois donc fort, vite sois donc grand

“Wayang is the traditional theatre of Java, Sunda (West Java), Bali, Lombok, Sumatra, Kalimantan in Indonesia and Malaysia. The term wayang is believed to derive from bayang (shadow), and shadow theatre puppetry is considered the model for other forms of this puppet, mask or dance performance. Music, and its visible manifestation dance, are both central to wayang performance.”**

We now present gorgeous and enthralling ney flute recordings played by unidentified Mevlevi dervishes in the city of Konya, Central Anatolia. The great Sufi mystic, poet and Islamic theologian Jalāl al-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (1207-1273), aka Rūmi, fled the Mongol invasion of his native Balkh (present-day Afghanistan) with his family and settled in Konya, where he lived until his death in 1273. Shortly after, Rumi’s followers founded the Sufi Mevlevi Order – whose members are famously called whirling dervishes – in Konya in 1273, which spread throughout Turkey, notably in Istanbul, Syria, Egypt and the Balkans.

The Mevlevi practice a form of Islamic mysticism using esoteric rituals and ceremonies with sacred music and dance to achieve a trance-like ecstasy in the remembrance of God (Dhikr). Thousands of Sufi pilgrims come to Konya each December to attend the Whirling Dervishes Festival, a week of inspired ceremonies and festivities.

The seven-holed ney flute, symbolizing  "yedi esma" (the seven names) in Sufism, is the Mevlevi sacred instrument par excellence. This deeply haunting devotional music seems to reverberate directly into the soul.

Heartfelt thanks to our friend João, who discovered this ultra-rare disc of music by Bisiriyu Atunrase, a forgotten Apala master. Except for two 7-inch recordings from the early 1960s posted on Youtube (1), I could find nothing out about him (if anyone has information, please let me know!). Judging from the album cover, this bandleader and vocalist also played the gangan talking drum. This disc was recorded on the label Star Records—the same label that released over 20 LPs by Haruna Isahola, the King of Apala—sometime in the 1970s. On this record, Atunrase and his group craft the kind of deep, raw, and mellifluous Apala music that expresses the heart of Yoruba culture and identity.

MusicRepublic NIGERIA – NIGÉRIA Bisiriyu Atunrase & His Apala Band – Star Records SRPS 45

The Ifa divination system was inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.

“The Ifa divination system, which makes use of an extensive corpus of texts and mathematical formulas, is practiced among Yoruba communities and by the African diaspora in the Americas and the Caribbean. The word Ifa refers to the mystical figure Ifa or Orunmila, regarded by the Yoruba as the deity of wisdom and intellectual development.

In contrast to other forms of divination in the region that employ spirit mediumship, Ifa divination does not rely on a person having oracular powers but rather on a system of signs that are interpreted by a diviner, the Ifa priest or babalawo, literally 'the priest’s father.' The Ifa divination system is applied whenever an important individual or collective decision has to be made.

The Ifa literary corpus, called odu, consists of 256 parts subdivided into verses called ese, whose exact number is unknown as they are constantly increasing (there are around 800 ese per odu). Each of the 256 odu has its specific divination signature, which is determined by the babalawo using sacred palm-nuts and a divination chain. The ese, considered the most important part of Ifa divination, are chanted by the priests in poetic language. The ese reflect Yoruba history, language, beliefs, cosmovision and contemporary social issues. The knowledge of Ifa has been preserved within Yoruba communities and transmitted among Ifa priests.”*
